A valley shaped for flying
La Cerdanya runs roughly east to west, which is why it catches so much sun and why its mornings are often calm and clear. The valley floor sits above 1,000 metres, so a balloon here lifts off already high in the mountains and rises alongside the ridgelines rather than far below them.
Because a balloon travels with the wind and never against it, no two flights follow the same line. The pilot reads the morning breeze and chooses the route on the day, which is part of what makes each flight its own.

The light of a mountain sunrise
Flights leave at first light, when the air is at its most stable. In the mountains that first hour of sun does something particular: the peaks are lit while the valley floor is still in shadow, so the landscape appears in layers and changes minute by minute as you drift.
It is also the quietest hour of the day. With the burner off, you hear cowbells, a dog, a river — and nothing else.
When to come
La Cerdanya flies well across the seasons, and each one looks completely different from the air: fresh green meadows in late spring, deep greens and long light in summer, gold and rust in autumn, and snow on the Cadí and the ski slopes in winter. Mountain weather is changeable, so it is worth allowing a spare morning in your plans.
Getting to La Cerdanya
La Cerdanya sits north of Barcelona, close to the French border, and is reached through the Cadí tunnel or over the Toses pass. It is a genuine mountain destination rather than a quick trip out of the city, which is why many visitors combine the flight with a night or two in the valley — and why the flight feels like a proper Pyrenean morning rather than an excursion.

Not guaranteed. A balloon goes where the wind takes it, so the pilot picks the route each morning. What is certain is the valley, the Segre and the surrounding peaks.
